Passengers purchase tickets at a small office inside the Mercado Público complex, where staff assign seats based on arrival order. The vehicles themselves are typically Toyota Land Cruisers or Nissan Patrols configured for nine to twelve passengers, chosen for their clearance on the unpaved sections above the coffee plantations. Luggage rides on roof racks under tarps, and drivers secure backpacks with nylon rope before departure. The road transitions from asphalt to compacted dirt roughly halfway up, where the gradient steepens and switchbacks tighten. During Colombia's wet season—April through June and September through November—the upper section develops ruts and washouts that extend travel time by fifteen to twenty minutes. Drivers navigate these stretches in first gear, and passengers in window seats often need to brace against the doorframe.
